Improve Your Math Study Skills

por Bert Delgadillo (31/08/2022)

This will surely help in tackling complicated Math problems later on in school. Teach your child to ask "Is there another way of solving?" when he or she cannot understand one explanation. This will help them realize that failure to understand does not mean they are stupid.

So what's the trick? The trick is that there isn't one. You can't trick students into finding something compelling if it isn't. Take a little bit of time to develop a few topics of study throughout the year that you find compelling- the Economy, the Presidential Campaigns, the Human Body, etc. Find an authentic way to present your result- the paper, the web, a magazine. Keep the project small, authentic and do-able.

The first Math concept is, of course, knowing the names and symbols of numbers. Children are very familiar with counting small numbers up to maybe 20. It is important that your child can recognize numbers up to 200 or greater.

Write a story, a real story with characters and plot, and add the math problem set. Write about wizards that need to use angles for their sorcery. Write about spice trading ships on the deep seas. Write a story that lasts a whole page before even getting to the math portion. You've engaged the right-side, or less analytical, part of the brain and you'll see a powerful effect of enhanced engagement.

As you plan your chess strategy you will learn that math is fun. Practice your math skills over and over again. Use your math skills in your chess board game. Do not make the mistake of trying to just get by with as little strategy as you can, that is, to trust in luck, to get you winning strategies. Stretch your imagination and use all your efforts to come up with a strategy that works every time. You can use creativity to develop a chess strategy that no one else will ever come up with. Use your persistence to keep trying and never give up. Keep trying even with failure after failure in your past. There are many successful people who accomplished their goals because they tried one more time.

Building the kind of culture that works for www.missionca.org student pairs or groups takes years and lots of practice. But before you give up and decide it doesn't work, determine if you are following tips #1 and #2 first.

You can even create your own funny math problems. Instead of the boring "If John has 3 marbles and Jenny has 5 more marbles than John, how many marbles do they have altogether?" you could write "If Witch Wilda has 3 hairy warts on her slimy tongue and Wizard Woku has 5 more warts on his slimy tongue than Witch Wilda, how many gross warts do they have altogether?" you would have a much better response from your child, after she has stopped giggling.

There is only one true answer in math. It is fun to take this concept into chess. Figure out the problem you need to solve. Know that there is only one correct answer for the solution and you can find it if you use math. Use good strategy, good math concepts and win your chess board game.
