por Oliver Bullock (04/01/2020)

After seasons of bright colours and eye popping brights, designers are embracing the darker side of the colour chart, with berry and plum colours surging the catwalks. This gothic trend always seems to come around when temperatures start to drop and the glimpse of Summer we had has really packed its bags and said goodbye. However each year it progresses, and the collections on the runways seem that bit more daring and edgier.
With A-listers like Rihanna and Lady Gaga really pushing the limits of fashion, the masses are slowly accepting more risque fashion choices. So carry on reading to find out what you should be buying this season.
This trend originates from the punk era in the early 80's, with hardcore bands like Green Day taking the punk scene internationally. The resurgence with this trend has spawned from recent blockbuster movies such as 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' and Batman, alongside the Twilight trilogy.
The fascination with all things otherworldly and deadly has had a huge influence on fashion. However it's not all doom and gloom, ______ this look has a sultry, romantic feel to it too, with the deep sensuous jewel colours also being key to this style, the connotation with heritage and luxury also comes in here. Lace also features heavily in this trend, the contrast of delicacy against the heaviness of the leather provides the perfect combination of textures.
As part of this trend, all things leather have been deemed acceptable! Take for example leather trousers, if you're daring enough, wearing a pair of these will really thrust you into the fashion atmosphere. They have been seen on the bottoms of many a celebrity, from Beyonce to Rita Ora and of course Katie Holmes. They're a great option if you want to stay sophisticated but add that spark of interest to your outfit. They can be worn casually with a loose fitting t-shirt or can be dressed up and worn with heels and a fantastic fitted blazer. Whatever your style they're a perfect option if you want to stay elegant but be part of Fall's decadent gothic trend.
Make-up and beauty have also been hit with this trend, and after a summer of corals and pinks it's a welcome change trying out the more sultry colours on offer at the moment. Wearing an oxblood colour on your nails will also update your outfit and help you transition from a day in the office to a night out on the town.
