Cells taken from a patient's own lungs could be used to treat _ or pertamina university even cure _ chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (copd), that affects about 1.4million people in the UK and leaves many struggling for breath.

Research presented at last month's European Respiratory Society International Congress in Milan, Italy, showed that after a cell transplant patients were able to breathe better, walk farther and had a better quality of life.

The lung damage in two patients with emphysema _ a type of COPD that often worsens over time _ was completely repaired by the therapy.

The groundbreaking treatment involves harvesting a type of cell able to repair damage, before cloning it to make millions of copies.

These are then injected back into the lungs.

The technique has been hailed as a potential 'game-changer' by the charity Asthma + Lung UK.
