Abstract

This study deals with the possible contamination of phreatic aquifers and surface waters by corpse putrefaction fluids, in the Itaquera Cemetery, situated within the sedimentary basin, eastern zone of the São Paulo city, Brazil. The used method involved several phases, as visit to the cemetery, interviews with the employees and with the community resident around the cemetery, soil and water samples collected from outcrops located within the cemetery or vicinities, geologic and topographic surveys and consultations to the pertinent literature, map and charts. This investigation allows diagnosing the Itaquera Cemetery (São Paulo city) as a suspicious contamination area, where the morgue management problems are probably that more contributed for such diagnosis.
