Abstract

The paper draws a picture of the situation of Education of Young and Adults (EYA) after the educational reforms that began in the 1990 years, reforms that were conditioned by the orientation of the neoliberal and economic adjustment politics. The impact of those reforms in EYA can be considered plenty negative, mainly in two aspects. The first aspect is related to the illiteracy index in the country, which continues high. In 2005, the illiteracy index in Brazil was 11,1%, while the average of Latin America and of Caribbean countries, in this same period, was of 9,5%. The second aspect is the evolution of the educational levels, which continues below the minimum established in the 1988 Constitution (eight years of fundamental studies).
