Abstract

This article reviewed the history of education of art in Brazil and refl ected on the political, cultural and social prejudices that art has suffered and is suffering since its deployment. Beyond the prejudices, also weighed on the infl uences of foreign concepts and methods that still interfere in our present. The Art is still conceived as a dispensable luxury, something complementary, an accessory to the teaching of other subjects and not as an activity of importance in itself. This characterization makes the art education still occupies a lowered place in the Brazilian’s school curriculum. The Art should not be crystallized into a rigid program, which should be followed to the letter, which allows no interventions, considerations and mainly participations. The Art should be seen as a way of living values, development of creativity and aesthetic sense, and is seen primarily as a form of knowledge, communication, expression and culture of a people.
