Abstract

The Brazilian Federal Govenment, through the law number 11.161 of August 5th 2005, established the teaching of the Spanish Language in mid and high schools throughout the country as an obligation of the Brazilian Public Educational System. This law also states that the educational system has the deadline of 5 years for this implementation, starting after 2005. The changes in educational policies coming from the Ministry of Education have been directed towards the improvement in the educational service. The role of the teacher of the Higher Education institutions are now in evidence as they are seen as responsible for the process of teaching and research as well as the formation of new professionals which must be capable of fulfilling the demands originated by competitive scenario of the 21st Century, when Brazil has become part of the globalized world as well as a member of Mercosul.
