About the Occurrence of Giant Mammal Fossils in Munipality of Coronel João Sá, Bahia State, Brazil.

Abstract

The most important records in “tanks” about the Pleistocene giant mammal in Bahia State was made in 50’s decade, however, new findings were described in the last years. In this paper a description of fossils belonging to the taxons: Tardigrada (Megatheriidae, Eremotherium laurillardi), Proboscidea (Gomphotheriidae, Stegomastodon waringi) and Notoungulata (Toxodontidae, Toxodontinae) are made, with comments about taphonomic and paleoecological aspects. These fossils were collected in a “tank” (water role) located in municipality of Coronel João Sá, Bahia. This is the first record of Pleistocene giant mammals in this municipality.
