Abstract

Pitanguinha Lagoon is a hypersaline coastal aquatic body, characterized by organic mats, which resulted from microbial activity. It is located between the municipalities of Saquarema and Araruama, in the northeast of the Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. The present paper is based on studies carried out in samples from microbial mats, where sixty-five species of endolithic cyanobacteria were identified. In this lagoon seven types of microbial mats are found: colloform, film, gelatinous, smooth, polygonal, pustuled and tufted, produced mainly by the filamentous cyanobacteria Lyngbya aestuarii, Microcoleus chthonoplastes and Schizothrix friesii. The family Chroococcaceae Nägeli 1849 is the most frequent in the area. Other families are: Synechococcaceae (24,62%); Phormidiaceae (18,46%); Oscillatoriaceae (7,69%); Entophysalidaceae (4,61%); Pseudanabaenaceae (4,61%); Merismopediaceae (3,08%); Schizothricaceae (3,08%); Xenococcaceae (3,08%); Hyellaceae (1,54%); Microcystaceae (1,54%) e Nostocaceae (1,54%). Squeletal remains include bivalves, gastropods, ostracods and foraminifers. The high frequency of the endolithic cyanobacteria allowed to recognize its mayor role in the formation of the hypersaline microbial mats.
