Abstract

Fossil diatom analyses were conducted in a 2.66 m long lake sediment core from Lagoa Olho D?Água, in Recife, Pernambuco Brazil. These sediments started being deposited at 7,330 years B. P. dating. The basal sediments have no preserved diatom frustules, which begin to appear preserved starting at depth of 1.54 m in the core. At 6,620 years B. P., the diatom fossil record is characterized by the appearance of Melosira sulcata, in synchrony wich brakish water taxa such Fragilaria sp1 and Nitzchia sp1 as well as with freshwater taxa belonging to Pinnularia sp2, Navicula sp1 and Fragilaria sp5. These latter taxa increase in numbers significantly un the last 3,000 years, while marine and brackish water taxa decrease. This variation can probably be explained by the present influence of the Jaboatão River in the lake.
