The Paraná River Delta as a wetland mosaic. Study case: The Biosphere Reserve MAB-UNESCO “Paraná Delta”

Abstract

Wetlands are complex and dynamic ecosystems. The Biosphere Reserve “Paraná Delta” presents good examples of this type of systems. In November 2000 the Program MAB-UNESCO approved the incorporation of the islands of the San Fernando, Argentina. The executor of this program is the Research Group on Wetland Ecology (GIEH) of the Faculdad de Ciencias Exactas, University of Buenos Aires. The Paraná Delta Biosphere Reserve, located in the lower Paraná River Delta, has 88,624 ha with an annual growth of 1,110 ha downstream the delta. The MAB-UNESCO Program involves the following projects: new touristy perspectives; eco-tourism; islanders History and Folklore; application of Ecological studies.
