Abstract

A description of the natural characteristics of the estuaries in the eastern part of the Bay of Biscay is presented. These areas constitute the most significant wetland zones, from the ecological standpoint, of northern Spain. A through analysis of the botanical and geomorphological variables permits to establish that geophysical factors have a functional control on the composition of flora communities. A methodological approach based on a geomorphological cartography is put forward, according to the objectives of the CABAH research network. The methodology is based on the identification and mapping of integrated homogeneous units (morphodynamic units) related to the abiotic controls in the ecosystem. These units, incorporated onto a GIS, will be useful to apply an environmental indicator system in order to improve their assessment and then, the design of suitable management actions on wetland zones.
