The aim of this study was to analyze a new design of NiTi rotary instrument (NRT) in regarding to its effectiveness in shaping curved root canals. Twenty curved root canals of extracted human molars were prepared with stainless steel manual instruments and twenty with NRT rotary instruments. With the aid of a film holder and radiographic contrast material, radiographs were taken, prior and postoperative. The images were analyzed using an image analysis software, and the final shapes were compared qualitative and quantitatively for the two techniques. Statistical analysis (student t test) showed that the final areas and the internal and external canal straightness in the cervical and median third were not significantly different between the two techniques (p>0.05), but for both, it was observed greater tendency to wear the curvature of the external apical third (p<0.05). The incidence of apical deviation was higher in manual technique. It was concluded that both techniques behaved similarly; on the other hand, the technique of mechanized tillage was qualitatively superior to the manual technique.Downloads
