Abstract

This paper briefly describes my experience and feelings as an undergraduate student beginning the Mathematics course at Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF). It also presents the results of a research I made with freshman students taking the Mathematics course at Universidade Guarulhos (UNG), comparing their expectations and professional dreams to mine.My reflections will take into consideration two important aspects: teachers life history and their project of life. Authors such as Garcia (1999), Nunes (2000) and Lima (2001) will support this study. Throughout this paper I refer to the song Encontros e Despedidas by Milton Nascimento and Fernando Brant sang by Maria Rita. It is about the experience one goes through when meeting new people and when saying goodbye to them. I compared these two moments to students academic life: when they start their course and then when they finish it, talking about their initial and final expectations.
