THE SCIENTIFIC INITIATION RESEARCH AT THE GUARULHOS UNIVERSITY, SÃO PAULO STATE, BRAZIL

Abstract

Since its beginning, in the year 1999, the initiation research program was intended for undergraduate students of the Guarulhos University (UnG). Its objectives are the development of scientifi c research under the guidance of a supervising professor with, at least, a master´s degree. Hitherto, more than 329 students had been awarded the scholarship. The requirements are: the student must have completed a suffi cient number of relevant disciplines and cannot hold any academic failure. The scholarship is awarded, under normal circumstances, for a period comprising of fi ve to twelve months, after an analysis of its scientifi c value, viability as well as an analysis of the supervisor’s and the student’s resumé the project might be renewed depending upon the student’s academic performance. Almost every UnG graduation course has a proper number of scholarships. The course with the largest numbers of awarded scholarships are Biological Sciences, Odontology, Psychology, Nursing, Mathematics and History. At least 2/3 of the supervisors are females. The perspective for the UnG Scientifi c Initiation Program are of continuous growth, professionalizing and improvement of the mechanisms of fostering, selection and evaluation projects. In addition, this program shall in the future have its own budget, in order to offer scientifi c grants to future students.
