THEORETICAL AND TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE OF NURSING ASSISTANTS ABOUT BLOOD PRESSURE MEASUREMENT
Abstract
Although blood pressure measurement is an easy procedure to implement, it is subject to many error factors, which could be related to the equipment, technique, patient, and professional environment. Thus, this study was designed to evaluate the theoretical and practical knowledge of the nursing assistants as regards blood pressure measurement. Twelve nursing assistants from a philanthropic hospital connected with the Irmandade Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo were assessed. To collect data a form similar to a type of Check-List was used, with 17 items related to the blood pressure measurement technique, which was used by professionals to perform the procedure, and a questionnaire with 7 multiple choice questions on the blood pressure measurement technique, to evaluate the professional’s theoretical knowledge. Among the assistant nurses studied, 66% were women, who had graduated less than 5 years ago (75%). The results showed that they had less theoretical than practical knowledge about blood pressure measurement. The means of correct answers to theoretical and practical evaluations corresponded to 40.57% and 50.73%, respectively. That is, both the theoretical and practical knowledge are unsatisfactory.Downloads
