Abstract

Dental bleaching has been one of the treatments most sought after by patients to improve the esthetics of the smile. However, it is a mistake to associate dental bleaching with a single laser treatment. There are two vital tooth bleaching techniques: in-office bleaching that can be used in association with light application, such as laser, and at-home bleaching performed under professional supervision. All Dentistry professionals must know about these techniques, because they are safe, conservative, and easy to perform, although there may be some differences. Nevertheless, dental bleaching is effectively achieved, because they use peroxide-based bleaching agents, which naturally decompose into free radicals that produce the bleaching effect without requiring the application of reactive agents, or energy sources such as lasers. However, in several clinical trials it has been observed that light sources, such as argon laser, may accelerate the action of the bleaching gels. It should be pointed out that clinically, the desired bleaching effect can be achieved irrespective of the use of light sources in a longer period of bleaching treatment.
