The World Health Organization (WHO) defines depression as a mental disorder represented by permanent sadness and lack of stimulation for activities that were previously practiced constantly. The literature reports the association of depression through therapies and medications, and nutrition plays an essential role in these behaviors. Objective: To describe the importance of nutritional behavior in the prevention of anxiety and depression. Methods: A literature review study including scientific articles that have been designed experimentally (randomized controlled clinical trials) and observational (case-control studies, case studies, cohort studies) carried out in humans that address nutritional behavior as a way of improving and treating anxiety and depression problems. Results: nutrition showed positive effects in some studies evaluated, both in the administration of minerals (zinc, magnesium), as well as in amino acids (tryptophan) and vitamins D and B, acting significantly in patients who presented signs of anxiety and depression. Conclusion: A balanced diet can improve anxiety and depression, considering that the nutritional factor associated with physical activities and professional monitoring can provide efficient and comprehensive treatment.
