Introduction: During the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous serious cases have arisen abruptly, requiring hospitalization in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) sectors, forcing hospitals to open new sectors. As a consequence, the work of the existing health care team in the unit has unfolded, especially the nursing team. Objective: To describe the nursing workload during the COVID-19 pandemic in intensive care units, exposing the work of the team and showing the different realities around the world. Method: A narrative bibliographic research was carried out answering the guiding question What is the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on nursing work? To this end, the LILACS and SCIELO databases were used between 2020 and 2023. Results: During the pandemic, the work of nursing teams suddenly increased with new protocols, a significant increase in patients, uncertainty of prognosis and fear of the unknown, with an increase in physical and mental work overload. Conclusion: The workload of nursing during the pandemic left many reflections on the quality of life of professionals and the physical and mental illness of the profession.
