CENTRAL SLEEP APNEA AND HEART FAILURE: EFFECTS OF SERVO-VENTILATION ON QUALITY OF LIFE
Keywords:
Sleep Apenea Central, Noninvasive Ventilation, Nervous System DiseasesAbstract
Introduction: Central sleep apnea results from a failure in brain signaling to the respiratory muscles, which can exacerbate heart failure. Clinical management includes positive pressure technologies, such as servo-ventilation. Objective: To investigate, through an integrative literature review, the effects of adaptive servo-ventilation in the management of central sleep apnea in heart failure patients, emphasizing clinical repercussions and quality of life. Method: An integrative review of publications between 2019 and 2024 was conducted across PubMed, VHL, and SciELO databases. Following the initial screening, four articles met the inclusion criteria. Results: Adaptive servo-ventilation demonstrated therapeutic potential, with a reduction in the apnea-hypopnea index and improved sleep efficiency, although limitations remain regarding its impact on quality of life and clinical efficacy. Conclusion: The findings highlight the benefits of this therapy; however, results concerning prognosis remain inconsistent, reinforcing the need for more robust studies and increased scientific production, particularly within the field of physiotherapy.
