Abstract

Depression is one of the pathologies that has been growing in the population in general and more intensely among the elderly, affecting the quality of life of these individuals. Myths, such as regarding the symptomatology of depression as something specific of aging, may lead to non-diagnosis and, consequently may aggravate a condition that could be treated and lead to recovery. When investigating the literature related to the subject, we found 47 articles, which were subdivided into 5 groups: prevalence of depression in the elderly; depression and treatment; depression and cognitive changes; the elderly and quality of life, and the elderly and the others.
